Abstract: The firing of coal in large-scale power plants and co-generation plants in Germany produces approx, 7 million tonnes of ash per year. In addition, there are approx, 4 million tonnes of flue gas purification residues (FGD products), about 25 million tonnes of which are produced in coal-fired plants. A prerequisite for the recycling of these by-products is the determination of their chemical composition as well as of certain mineralogical and soil mechanics parameters. The important parameters include ignition loss, grain size distribution, free lime content, compression behaviour (Proctor density) and compressive strength
